Carpet Installation in Burlington, NC
Carpet is the quietest, softest floor you can buy, and the hardest one to keep fresh through a humid Piedmont summer. In the right rooms, with the right fiber and pad, it’s a good choice. Here’s how to choose, and what we do when carpet is already damaged.

Quick answer: Nylon is the most durable carpet fiber and makes up about 60 percent of residential pile carpet. Polyester is soft and stain-resistant but wears faster, and olefin suits low-pile styles. The pad matters as much as the carpet: usually no more than 7/16 inch thick, or 3/8 inch for Berber and stairs, at 6 to 8 pounds density. Carpet works best in bedrooms and living areas. Keep it out of rooms that stay damp.
What are the main types of carpet fiber?
Nylon is the most durable synthetic fiber and makes up about 60 percent of residential pile carpet. Polyester is soft, bright and naturally stain-resistant, but it wears faster and can pill and shed. Olefin is moisture-resistant and colorfast, but it crushes easily, so it’s mostly used in low-pile, looped styles. Wool is the premium natural fiber, naturally soil-resistant but costly.
| Fiber | Strengths | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Nylon | Most durable, good stain resistance with treatment, holds up in busy rooms | Costs more than polyester or olefin |
| Polyester | Soft, rich color, naturally stain-resistant | Wears faster, can pill and shed |
| Olefin | Moisture-resistant, colorfast | Crushes easily, mostly for low-pile loops |
| Wool | Naturally soil-resistant, long-lived | Expensive, and not inherently stain-resistant |
Solution-dyed carpet, where the color goes in when the fiber is made, is extremely colorfast. Look for a wear and stain warranty of 7 to 10 years on a quality product.
Cut pile or loop pile: what’s the difference?
- Cut pile has yarn ends cut open. It’s soft and comes in plush, Saxony and frieze styles. Frieze has the tightest twist, around 7 to 9 twists per inch, and hides footprints and wear well.
- Loop pile keeps the yarn in uncut loops. Berber is the best-known style. It’s durable, and the loops can snag on claws.
- Cut-and-loop mixes both for texture and pattern.
Density matters as much as style. In a dense carpet you shouldn’t be able to see the backing when you part the pile. For high-traffic rooms, a pile height of about half an inch or less holds up best.
What carpet pad do you need?
The pad matters as much as the carpet, and it’s where people try to save the wrong money. Two numbers matter: thickness and density.
- Thickness: residential pads generally shouldn’t exceed 7/16 inch. For Berber, low-pile carpet and stairs, 3/8 inch.
- Density: measured in pounds per cubic foot, usually 6 to 8 for residential use. Higher density lasts longer. A thicker, softer pad isn’t better, and it can flex a carpet enough to wrinkle it or split a seam.
- The maker’s spec: using a pad outside the carpet maker’s range can void the warranty.
Replace the pad whenever you replace the carpet. Old pad is worn out and shortens the life of the new carpet.
Is carpet a good choice for a Burlington home?
In the right rooms, yes. Carpet is the quietest, warmest and softest floor you can put in a bedroom, and it gives older feet good grip. It takes the chill off a cold winter morning and cuts noise between floors.
The challenge is moisture and mess. July highs in Burlington average around 90 degrees, and the air stays heavy through August. Carpet and pad hold moisture, and they hold on to Piedmont red clay and the yellow pine pollen that coats everything each spring. About half of Burlington’s homes were built in 1978 or earlier, and many sit on crawl spaces, so we check the subfloor for moisture before carpet goes down.
- A fit: bedrooms, family rooms and stairs
- Not a fit: bathrooms, laundry rooms and any space that stays damp

Which carpet is best with pets and kids?
A stain-resistant fiber with a tight cut pile and good density, in a color that hides dirt, does best. Avoid loop pile with cats and dogs that snag. Keep pet accidents in mind: carpet soaks up urine into the pad, so in rooms where accidents are likely, a hard floor is easier to keep fresh. Our pet-friendly flooring page compares every floor for life with dogs and cats.
What should you know about carpet on stairs?
Stairs are the hardest-working part of any carpet job. Use a dense, tightly twisted carpet and a firm pad no more than 3/8 inch thick. Soft, thick pad on stairs lets the carpet move and wear at the nosing. We check that the treads are solid and quiet before carpeting, and that the carpet is stretched and wrapped tight over each step.
Can carpet be repaired or patched?
Yes, often. Many carpet problems can be fixed without replacing the room:
- Burns, stains and pet damage: a damaged section can be cut out and replaced with a matching piece from a closet or remnant
- Separated seams: re-seamed and secured
- Rippling or loose carpet: re-stretched
- Torn edges and snags: trimmed and secured
A repair is only as good as the match. If you have leftover carpet from the original install, keep it. A patch is cheaper than replacing a whole room.
Why does carpet ripple or wrinkle?
Rippling means the carpet has gone loose. The usual causes are carpet that wasn’t stretched tight enough with a power stretcher, a pad that is too thick or too soft, humidity or heat that relaxes the backing, and heavy furniture dragged across it. The fix is to re-stretch it. If the pad is the problem, it gets replaced. Brushing it flat or leaving it won’t hold.
How do you keep carpet fresh in humid weather?
- Run the air conditioning in summer so the house doesn’t stay damp
- Vacuum often, since grit, red clay and pollen wear fibers and hold moisture
- Dry spills and wet spots quickly. Health agencies say to dry water-damaged materials within 24 to 48 hours, or mold can start.
- Clean with a method that dries fast, and open windows or run fans while it dries
- Keep carpet out of rooms that stay damp, and fix leaks right away
Persistent musty smells mean something is wet underneath. Our subfloor repair page explains how we find the source.
What does carpet installation involve?
- We come look. We measure, bring samples and check what’s under the carpet.
- We check the subfloor. Moisture, squeaks and loose panels. Old tile under carpet in a pre-1980 house gets tested before it’s disturbed.
- You get a written price. Carpet, pad, tear-out, tack strip, trim and transitions, each on its own line.
- We prep. Old carpet and pad come out, and tack strip goes in.
- We install. Pad down, carpet cut and seamed, then stretched tight with a power stretcher and trimmed to the walls.
- We walk it with you. We go over care and warranty and what to expect in the first few weeks.
How much does carpet installation cost in Burlington?
Price per square foot is only part of it. Here’s what moves the total:
- The carpet: fiber, density, pile style and warranty
- The pad, which should never be an afterthought
- Square footage, seams and stairs, which are priced separately
- Removing and hauling away the old carpet and pad
- Subfloor repair or leveling
- Furniture moving, transitions and trim
A cheap total that skips the pad or the tear-out isn’t cheap. Our estimates list each line.
Is carpet tile a good idea?
It can be, for the right space. Carpet tile comes in squares that lock or stick in place, and a damaged tile can be swapped without redoing the room. It’s common in offices, basements and playrooms. For a living room or bedroom, broadloom carpet is usually softer and more comfortable.

More carpet questions
Should the pad be replaced with new carpet?
Yes. Old pad is usually worn out and can wear a new carpet out early. The pad is a small part of the cost compared to the carpet it protects.
Is carpet bad for allergies?
Carpet holds dust and pollen until it’s vacuumed, so regular vacuuming and cleaning matter. Some people prefer hard floors for that reason. If allergies are a concern, talk to your doctor and consider which rooms really need carpet.
Can carpet go over a concrete slab?
Yes, with the right pad and a moisture test first. Moisture coming up through a slab can damage carpet and pad and cause odors.
How long does carpet last?
It depends on the fiber, the density, the pad and how much traffic it gets. A wear and stain warranty of 7 to 10 years is a good sign of what the maker expects from a quality product.
